Detailed Analysis
Yellowjackets Season 1 centers on a 1996 girls' high school soccer team surviving a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness and descending into savagery, with a parallel 2021 timeline of the adult survivors.
The premise draws from classic survival horror and Lord of the Flies-style group dynamics rather than identity politics, yet features noticeable progressive elements through its casting and character arcs. The ensemble is overwhelmingly female-led, with core teen survivors including Shauna (Sophie Nélisse), Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Natalie (Sophie Thatcher), and Misty (Sammi Hanratty), alongside adult counterparts like Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress. Taissa's lesbian relationship with Van (Liv Hewson) forms a recurring subplot across timelines, including secret teen romance and adult marriage, while Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) has gay backstory flashbacks.
Key Factors
- Prominent lesbian relationship between Taissa and Van as a sustained character arc
- All-female core ensemble in a traditionally mixed-gender survival premise
- Feminist-leaning creators Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and director Karyn Kusama framing themes of female empowerment and trauma
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
