The core premise of an interracial adoptive family with a Black son raised by white parents is baked into the show's origin and handled through personal family dynamics rather than activist framing. Season 2 introduces more screen time for Black characters like Deja and her mother Shauna in foster care contexts, alongside explorations of grief, mental health, and addiction, but these remain character-driven without overt lectures on systemic issues, identity politics, or critiques of traditional norms. No evidence of race- or gender-swapping established characters, prominent LGBTQ+ focal points, creator statements pushing activism for this season, or audience backlash labeling it 'woke.' The diversity serves the established premise organically without becoming the narrative engine or clashing with the story's setting and tone.
