Storytelling remains focused on high-stakes action, tactical operations, and personal team dynamics, with only incidental progressive touches like a single episode involving Hondo experiencing racial profiling by an Arizona cop and another touching on emotions around a school incident. These elements feel authentic to a modern cop show in a diverse city and do not drive plots, arcs, or include lectures on systemic issues.

Creators Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas emphasize realism from police input rather than overt activism in early seasons. Audience reception shows no significant backlash labeling it 'woke'; complaints about preachiness emerge in later seasons amid BLM, but Season 2 prioritizes entertainment, delivering thrilling procedurals without compromising quality for messaging.
