The protagonists are very diverse, while antagonists are almost exclusively white. Constantly brings up topics of "generational" pain and trauma. Girls are super heros that rescue themselves even when being rescued. The only surprise is that Kaycee has a white girlfriend, but to be fair, he won't even kiss her because of Monica. It's palatable, but not good.
