The lead character Hondo is race-swapped from the original white portrayal to a Black LAPD sergeant from South L.A., appointed after his white predecessor shoots an unarmed Black teenager, setting up core plotlines around police-community distrust, LAPD reforms, and racial bias. The cast is diversely assembled with Black, Latina, Asian, and female actors in prominent roles, including a female SWAT member and captain, reflecting modern L.A. demographics in a way that feels somewhat organic rather than forced.

Episodes occasionally touch on social issues like immigrant arrests sparking community backlash or protests, but most are standard high-stakes tactical missions without heavy lecturing. Creators Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas incorporate real police input for authenticity, with themes influencing character arcs like Hondo's dual loyalties, yet the show prioritizes team dynamics and entertainment over overt activism. Reception was mixed as a clichéd procedural, with praise for diversity amid CBS's broader criticisms, but no significant audience backlash labeling it 'woke' or prioritizing message over quality.
