Detailed Analysis
Season 2 centers on the core trio—Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez)—investigating Bunny Folger’s murder amid podcast rivalries and Arconia neighbor suspicions, with episode plots revolving around a parrot witness, art-world parties, stakeouts, a blackout, and paternal conflicts.
The primary progressive element is the subplot in which Mabel enters a romantic relationship with new character Alice Banks (Cara Delevingne), including a kiss after destroying a sculpture and several dates; this confirms Mabel’s bisexuality in a low-key manner without self-doubt or lectures, tying briefly into Alice’s art project that exploits Mabel’s trauma before the relationship ends. No established characters are race- or gender-swapped, no systemic oppression narratives appear, and creator statements emphasize mystery plotting and New York atmosphere over activism.
Key Factors
- Mabel-Alice same-sex romance subplot establishing bisexuality
- Casual LGBTQ+ representation in modern NYC setting without narrative centrality
- Organic diverse casting with no forced changes or identity-focused messaging
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
