Detailed Analysis
Mad Men Season 2 is a straightforward period drama set in 1962 at the Sterling Cooper ad agency, centered on Don Draper's infidelities, Betty's domestic struggles, Peggy Olson's professional ambitions in a male-dominated workplace, and office rivalries amid events like the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Its storytelling follows classic narrative traditions of character-driven drama and historical reflection, with no modern activist framing, identity politics, or critiques of traditional norms imposed from a contemporary lens. Casting matches the era's demographics, featuring leads like Jon Hamm as Don, Elisabeth Moss as Peggy, January Jones as Betty, and Christina Hendricks as Joan, without any race- or gender-swapping of established figures or forced diversity mandates.
Key Factors
- Historical 1962 setting with era-accurate casting and social norms depicted realistically
- Peggy's workplace rise and gender dynamics presented as organic period elements, not activist messaging
- Creator Matthew Weiner's intent focused on unvarnished period realism rather than contemporary social justice themes
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
