The all-Black cast and setting provide organic representation tied to the premise, while progressive elements such as prominent gay characters and storylines (including Charles's arcs and a dedicated Charles-Varney romance), plus themes of toxic masculinity and inherited trauma, appear in subplots and influence some character developments without driving the core narrative of survival and rivalries. These aspects remain incidental rather than foundational, with no overt social justice lectures, systemic critiques, race/gender-swapping, or creator activist intent, keeping the focus on lurid entertainment and personal ascent stories. The show's content profile reflects noticeable but non-dominant progressive touches amid standard soap-opera vulgarity and stereotypes, resulting in its official overall woke score of 4/10.
