Detailed Analysis
The series' foundational premise revolves around four middle-aged men confronting the erosion of traditional male privilege amid women's empowerment and the 'death throes of patriarchy,' with Season 3 explicitly centering plots on 'new era of masculinity,' paternity struggles, romantic anarchy, and encounters with antifeminist concepts like the manosphere and incels.
Progressive elements are not incidental but drive the narrative: a child character (Iris) temporarily adopts a male identity and pronouns as Jacobo before resolving into lesbian identification; prominent sapphic relationships and open/non-monogamous dynamics; repeated framing of traditional masculinity as toxic or outdated requiring 'deconstruction.' Creator focus on adapting to equality and modern gender norms embeds activist-adjacent themes centrally, with episode titles and arcs like 'Evolving Men' and 'She's Definitely a Lesbian' underscoring identity politics. Audience reactions include labeling it a 'woke manifesto' that intensifies across seasons, confirming the ideology's prominence over pure entertainment.
Key Factors
- Core premise of men adapting to feminist-driven social changes and deconstructing masculinity
- Season 3 child gender identity exploration subplot with temporary trans identification
- Central themes of romantic anarchy, lesbian relationships, and critiques of traditional norms/manosphere
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
