Smash and Grab scores a low 1/10 for wokeness by sticking to a clean visual story of robot autonomy and friendship with no social or political messaging added.
Smash and Grab is a dialogue-free 2019 Pixar SparkShorts animated short built around two original robot characters, Smash with his hammer arm and Grab with his manipulator hands, who work tethered inside a locomotive engine room on a Mars-like planet.
The story follows their observation of freer robots powered by portable batteries, their decision to sever their own cables, seize power sources, fight security forces, and ultimately escape through mutual sacrifice and companionship. These elements remain strictly visual and action-driven, centered on friendship, personal autonomy, and classic escape motifs without any activist framing or social commentary layered onto the premise. The director Brian Larsen has stated that the concept grew directly from his own dissatisfaction with repetitive story-supervisor duties at Pixar, casting the robots as simple appliances rebelling against programmed drudgery to achieve autonomy and connection with each other.
Because the characters are wholly original creations rather than altered source-material figures and carry no identity-based casting changes, the short avoids any forced demographic messaging. Thematic centrality stays on universal buddy-story beats of loyalty and freedom, keeping the overall ideological content minimal and the entertainment focus intact.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
