Detailed Analysis

The 2026 Resident Evil film earns a low woke score because it relies on an entirely original story and cast with no alterations to any established game or film characters.

The premise follows Bryan, a medical courier protagonist created specifically for this project, as he attempts to deliver a package during a virus outbreak in Raccoon City. Supporting figures such as Dr. Carl and Dr. Maxine function in scientist or enforcer roles without any thematic emphasis placed on their identities or backstories.

The narrative centers on Bryan's everyman incompetence and chaotic encounters with infected creatures rather than any social messaging. Thematic centrality remains absent, as no plot points, dialogue, or character arcs engage with systemic issues, identity politics, or critiques of traditional norms. Creator intent aligns with pure survival horror, and audience and critic discourse focuses on deviations from game lore instead of progressive elements. This approach keeps the film free of forced ideological insertions that could detract from its core entertainment focus.

Key Factors

  • Entirely original characters and story with no established canon changes
  • Incidental gender-swapped supporting role for a new character with no thematic emphasis
  • Pure survival horror premise without social justice themes or creator activist intent
  • Audience and critic discourse centers on deviation from game lore rather than progressive messaging

Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.

A couple brief scenes where it seems pretty woke, but it undoes itself quickly.

It is not Resident Evil at all — more like a gore-comedy aimed at teenagers. The main character acts more like a streamer instead a RE Hero. And is yelling all the time like a little girl (don't know why). The only one tough character is, of course, a Black woman.

This is a completely invalid take for this site. The change in lore from the video games has nothing to do with wokeness and rating it a 9/10 for it. While I agree that they always cast a black woman as the cop/detective, I’d like to add that the majority of the cast was white and !!!SPOILER AHEAD!!! she died very early which is a common trend with black characters. I suggest you reevaluate your score good sir. It’s a 2 at best.
