Chainsaw Man disguises a surprisingly heavy amount of ideological messaging beneath its edgy presentation. Repeatedly pushing anti-capitalist and anti-establishment themes, while the Gun Devil plot turns guns, mass violence, and public fear into an obvious social commentary. Makima's plot reinforces the show's obsession with power/control, and systemic exploitation. These themes frequently feel less like organic storytelling and more like deliberate messaging about capitalism, institutions, inequality, and exploitation, getting over straightforward entertainment. Thankfully, the series still has plenty politically incorrect elements going for it: brutal violence, vulgar humor, sexual content, morally questionable characters, and no interest in lecturing the audience about traditional morality, identity or representation. Unfortunately, the constant ideological subtext drags it down considerably.
