Reviews frequently frame the narrative as a critique of toxic masculinity, with male characters portrayed as shallow caricatures of imbeciles or psychopaths, and discussions of misogyny, softboy culture, and societal fascination with dangerous men. Casting includes Griffin Matthews as Teddy Lockwood, Kate's snarky half-brother in an elite white family, adding incidental diversity without apparent narrative clashes or backlash.

Creator interviews and Penn Badgley's comments stress portraying Joe as a sexual predator and the show's social commentary on obsession and justice, aligning with progressive gender critiques. However, these elements do not dominate or overhaul the core thriller storytelling; there are no race or gender swaps, forced DEI lectures, or widespread audience backlash labeling it 'woke' beyond niche complaints like 'girl power bs' on Reddit. The mixed reception focuses more on a divisive, underwhelming ending than ideological intrusions, keeping progressive influence significant but not overwhelming.
