Kitty's arc prominently features messy crushes on girls like Yuri (a lesbian) and Praveena, alongside boys like Min Ho and Dae, creating love triangles that prioritize fluid sexuality and sapphic tension, with showrunners explicitly stating bisexuality is an 'essential part' of her character. The ensemble includes multiple queer characters—gay best friend Q hooking up with a rival, Yuri and Juliana's struggling lesbian relationship—making non-traditional identities a focal point across subplots in what is otherwise a teen romance set in a Seoul international school.

This results in problematic tropes like unaddressed outing of Kitty's sexuality, bisexual characters framed as cheaters or phasing out same-sex interests, sidelined sapphic stories serving het pairings, and punitive endings for lesbians, drawing criticism even from queer audiences for superficial and harmful stereotypes. Creator intent from Jenny Han and team to push Kitty's queerness as planned narrative core, combined with cast interviews hyping LGBTQ+ rep 'for all ages,' underscores activist embedding that disrupts coherent storytelling amid the chaos, alienating viewers expecting light romance while compromising entertainment with ideological maneuvering in a YA context.
