Vanya's romance with Sissy functions as a central thread set in 1960s Dallas, complete with on-screen intimacy, homophobia confrontations, and time-travel resolutions that steer emotional payoffs and episode decisions away from the core apocalypse storyline. Klaus's relationship with Dave receives expanded historical treatment, including compound visits and reckonings with past prejudice, further elevating identity themes over unified narrative momentum. These threads coexist with diverse casting choices in the 1960s setting that avoid source-material swaps yet still layer in additional race-focused subplots. Critics praised the season's LGBT focus while a segment of the audience registered complaints about the resulting ideological intrusions, illustrating how the progressive elements compete with and dilute the entertainment priorities of the time-travel premise.
