Supporting characters like Black actors Angus Sampson (Cisco) and Jazz Raycole (Izzy) fit their established roles without clashing with the setting or narrative. There is a minor LGBTQ subplot involving Izzy's romance with a female law student, which appears incidental and does not drive the central plot of Mickey being framed for murder and defending himself from prison.

Themes focus on classic legal thriller elements—corruption, innocence, courtroom battles—without lectures on systemic racism, identity politics, or social justice activism. No creator interviews emphasize progressive intent, and reception is overwhelmingly positive with high Rotten Tomatoes scores, early renewal for Season 5, and minimal backlash.

A single outlier review labels it 'woke' for its uncompromised Mexican lead critiquing law enforcement, but this is not reflective of broader sentiment. The show prioritizes tight storytelling and entertainment over ideological messaging, delivering a compelling season unburdened by heavy-handed progressive intrusions.
