The Hunting Wives layers on heavy political satire, abortion hypocrisy, and explicit sapphic affairs between Sophie, Margo, and Callie to attack conservative values—additions that dominate the adaptation. At 7/10 woke, skip it if you want entertainment without the messaging.
The Hunting Wives centers on Sophie (Brittany Snow), a liberal Massachusetts transplant, entering the world of East Texas socialite Margo (Malin Åkerman) and her clique of conservative wives who hunt, attend church, and hide affairs—including explicit sapphic relationships between Sophie and Margo, and Margo and Callie (Jaime Ray Newman).
These queer storylines drive character arcs, jealousy subplots, and the murder cover-up after Margo kills Abby to conceal her own abortion from an affair with a teen. The adaptation by showrunner Rebecca Cutter deliberately amplifies red-state/blue-state clashes, abortion hypocrisy among anti-abortion public figures, and female sexual agency, elements largely absent from May Cobb’s 2021 novel. Cutter has stated the intent to explore “women behaving badly” and conservative hypocrisy, adding political satire and explicit queer sex scenes that were not foundational in the source material.
