Storytelling prioritizes suspense, violence, and psychological cat-and-mouse games between FBI agent Ryan Hardy and cult leader Joe Carroll, delivering pure entertainment devoid of social justice lectures, identity politics, or critiques of systemic issues. Casting features a predominantly white ensemble led by Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy, with incidental diversity like Adan Canto as a cult follower that feels organic to the narrative and setting, lacking any race/gender-swapping or DEI-driven changes.

Creator Kevin Williamson, known for Scream, shows no activist intent in interviews, focusing instead on horror tropes. Reception highlights plot flaws and over-the-top violence but praises its gripping thrills, with zero backlash over wokeness, DEI, or political messaging—truly a relic of pre-woke television that succeeds by avoiding ideological intrusions altogether.
