Storytelling adheres closely to biblical events like the feeding of the 5,000 and walking on water, with extra-biblical character backstories emphasizing faith, redemption, and human frailty without injecting identity politics, systemic critiques, feminism, LGBTQ+ focal points, or social justice lectures. Creator Dallas Jenkins, an evangelical Christian, explicitly rejects wokeness, addresses a minor crew pride flag incident (not show-endorsed, swiftly handled), and focuses on making scripture accessible rather than activist messaging. Reception is overwhelmingly positive among faith audiences with controversies limited to purist biblical accuracy complaints or business disputes, no significant 'go woke go broke' backlash or criticisms of progressive overreach.
