Episodes like 'Hair Care Products' devote entire plots to systemic racism, with Cloud 9 employees confronting the locking of Black haircare products as a metaphor for broader oppression, complete with white ally lectures and corporate virtue-signaling. The season is saturated with COVID-19 narratives portraying essential retail workers' struggles, intertwined with BLM riots and looting fears, framing class and racial inequities as central conflicts.

Casting features prominent non-traditional identities, such as Nico Santos' flamboyantly gay undocumented immigrant Mateo, whose traits amplify identity politics without narrative necessity beyond representation quotas. Creator Justin Spitzer's explicit intent to embed progressive politics—unionization, immigration, healthcare critiques—peaks here, prioritizing activism over humor, as evidenced by audience backlash on Reddit and forums decrying it as 'far-left woke propaganda,' 'SJW diatribes,' and a shift from comedy to scolding. These elements dominate subplots and emotional arcs, alienating viewers who sought lighthearted store antics rather than ideological hectoring.
