The season centers on Harvey's emotional regrouping post-Donna's departure, Mike's prison arc and impending marriage to Rachel, and Jessica's firm leadership challenges amid fallout from Mike's fraud exposure. Casting features organic diversity with established characters like Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres, a strong black female managing partner) and Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle, biracial lawyer), but these elements feel incidental to the plot rather than focal points or justifications for changes to source material—there are no race/gender swaps, forced inclusions clashing with the setting, or identity-driven arcs.

Themes revolve around individual accountability, loyalty, therapy for personal growth (Harvey's sessions), and power dynamics, with no overt critiques of systemic issues, patriarchy, or identity politics. Creator Aaron Korsh's interviews emphasize plot twists, character development, and entertainment value, showing no activist intent.

Audience reception lacks any significant 'woke' backlash; recent discussions even recommend stopping after Season 5 to avoid later seasons' perceived shifts, highlighting its appeal as straightforward, non-preachy escapism. This purity of entertainment-focused storytelling without social commentary is a refreshing strength.
