Queer relationships and explicit celebrations of polyamory, orgies, and Pride parades form major plot points, with Lito's public coming out and Nomi's activism central emotional drivers. The show's premise collapses without this framework of transcending borders, sexualities, and cultures via shared humanity, overtly pushing messages of inclusivity, anti-fascism, and empathy as antidotes to division, explicitly tied by cast to resisting Trump-era politics.

Creator Wachowskis' trans identities infuse activist intent, prioritizing identity politics and social justice over pure sci-fi adventure, resulting in audience complaints of preachiness, forced LGBTQ+ focus, and emotional indulgence that sidelines plot for ideological lectures. This compromises entertainment by making progressive activism the foundational appeal, alienating viewers seeking escapist storytelling.
