The most notable is the developing romance between David and Patrick, featuring positive, normalized LGBTQ+ representation without any drama from homophobia, societal rejection, or identity politics lectures—this arc influences David's character development but shares space with ensemble plots like Johnny's motel management, Moira's town council antics, and Alexis's career struggles. Casting remains predominantly white and straight-presenting, authentically reflecting a rural Canadian town without forced DEI insertions, race/gender-swapping, or prominent non-traditional identities beyond David's pansexuality.

Creators, led by Dan Levy, emphasized wholesome inclusion over activism, avoiding critiques of systemic issues, patriarchy, or traditional norms. Reception was overwhelmingly positive with Emmys and fan love, no significant backlash decrying 'wokeness' or quality compromise, allowing the season to shine as pure entertainment.
