Ethan Chandler's bisexual encounter with Dorian Gray occurs naturally amid the show's exploration of London's demimonde fringes and is presented without commentary or identity politics emphasis. The cast remains period-appropriate with no race- or gender-swapping of literary source characters.

Themes center on classic horror elements—vampires, Frankenstein's experiments, personal damnation—rather than systemic oppression narratives or critiques of traditional norms. Creator statements highlight strong women within the story's context, not activist intent. Minor overlaps with progressive topics exist but do not drive the plot, character arcs, or appeal; audience reception for Season 1 focuses on atmospheric horror without widespread 'woke' criticism.
