Creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, along with Tatiana Maslany, explicitly stated that the 2016 election prompted them to intensify 'Smash the Patriarchy' themes, with Maslany drawing direct parallels between the insecure old patriarch Westmoreland and contemporary politics. This framing drives key plot points, including the clones' collective resistance framed as matriarchal solidarity under Mrs. S versus toxic male authority figures like Westmoreland and Coady.

Prominent LGBTQ representation persists with Felix Dawkins as Sarah's openly gay brother providing emotional core support and Cosima's relationship with Delphine as a focal queer storyline amid the island conspiracy. Casting features Maslany embodying all clones across diverse identities while Jordan Gavaris's Felix remains integral. Audience and critic reception praised the autonomy and sisterhood themes without notable backlash, though the season's overt ideological layering on the sci-fi premise marks a noticeable escalation from earlier entries.
