Across the reviewed seasons, the series consistently embeds progressive ideological elements through extensive LGBTQ+ representation (including a recurring trans character facing hormone and harassment issues), racial power struggles, critiques of systemic oppression, prison privatization, and authority figures, with creator Jenji Kohan explicitly prioritizing an unusually diverse cast and identity-driven narratives over the source memoir. These themes shape alliances, conflicts, subplots, and emotional arcs—from hunger strikes and riots tied to racial injustice to ongoing lesbian relationships and BLM-inspired activism—making them foundational rather than incidental. The aggregate focus on social messaging around race, gender, sexuality, and corporate exploitation produces the show's official overall woke score of 8/10.
