It is an adaption of an older work, that was highly influential among the BL genre for its explicitly queer character in the 70's. Not only does this adaption substiantially contain more scenes of queer couples then straight, it also subverts expectations by setting up what the reader would believe is a straight relationship from the original manga, and makes the character queer. Part of the OST and one of the character is voiced by a blasian trans singer, and the show touches on topics such an economics, politics, war, racism, with its allegories being explicity based around homophobia and transphobia. One sequence of the story is even based around an LGTBQ+ project that happened in America.
