Casting prioritizes diversity with Maori co-lead Eddie Redcliffe, Asian Abby Matsuda, and multiple Indigenous characters, extending Season 1's anti-colonial subplots into Season 2's explicit racial politics around land rights, traditional ownership, youth detention centers evoking real systemic oppression scandals, and critiques of policing and power structures in the Top End setting. These elements manifest as satirical jabs at traditional masculinity, homophobia, sexism, and colonialism, but their centrality—flipping crime genre tropes to center female/queer/POC perspectives—intrudes upon the mystery-comedy framework, layering identity politics and social justice messaging that risks prioritizing activist subversion over pure entertainment. Creator duo The Kates infuse authentic queer and feminist intent drawn from their circles, while audience reactions show minor complaints of 'cringe' woke dialogue amid mostly positive but ideologically aligned praise, underscoring how the show's appeal hinges on progressive framing that compromises broader, traditional storytelling appeal.
