Creator Don Mancini, openly gay, has stated intent to inject queer content drawn from his closeted Catholic youth, framing the school setting and father-son reconciliation fantasies around homophobia.

Audience reception shows clear divides, with Metacritic user reviews decrying 'woke crap' and 'homosexual talk' from the start, while LGBTQ-focused outlets praise the representation.
