Jake's arc includes repeated homophobic abuse from his father Lucas, who strikes him for being gay and destroys his belongings, while Chucky manipulates Jake by referencing his own 'queer kid' Glen/Glenda (genderfluid) and urging him to embrace killing. Creator Don Mancini, an openly gay man, has stated he intentionally injected these elements drawing from his closeted Catholic upbringing and experiences of bullying.

The ensemble cast features racial diversity with Black actor Arnarson as Devon and Filipino-American Teo Briones as Junior, alongside the white leads. Audience reception includes direct backlash labeling the show 'woke crap' and criticizing the 'homosexual talk' and 'liberal agenda' in user reviews on Metacritic and Reddit, alongside GLAAD award nominations for its LGBTQ+ focus. These elements shape multiple character arcs and emotional beats without fully supplanting the murder-horror premise.
