These follow traditional emotional arcs without activist framing. The standout progressive element is the recasting of recurring character Marshmallow with trans actress Jari Jones, shifting from David Herman's deeper-voiced portrayal explicitly to avoid 'deep-voiced girl in a dress' stereotypes, as Jones stated in Deadline interviews.

This culminates in the episode 'Hope N’ Mic Night,' where Marshmallow performs 'Seabird' for supportive parents, positioned as empowering trans representation and the season's most discussed highlight. Creator Loren Bouchard has emphasized diversity's importance in interviews, describing it as enhancing storytelling without tokenism. Audience reception shows praise from outlets like ScreenRant and GLAAD for the change, alongside scattered fan complaints that it altered the character's original comedic edge, but no broad review-bombing or cancellation of the season's appeal.
