The core premise and episodes remain traditional cyberpunk sci-fi focused on immortality, class conflict between Meth elites and others, trauma, and action, without identity politics or systemic oppression narratives as foundational drivers. Casting features Anthony Mackie as Kovacs and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quell, alongside Simone Missick as bounty hunter Trepp, but these align with the sleeve-swapping mechanic allowing fluid bodies rather than forced changes to source material.

Trepp is depicted as a lesbian married to wife Myka, with one interrupted sex scene and their relationship shown as a non-issue in the future setting, yet it functions as incidental supporting detail without driving arcs or themes. Audience reactions include scattered complaints labeling the diverse cast and Trepp's orientation as 'woke' pandering, but the season prioritizes fight scenes and plot twists over messaging, keeping progressive elements minor and non-central.
