Spiral: From the Book of Saw follows Detective Zeke Banks and his father Marcus Banks as they pursue a Jigsaw copycat killer targeting corrupt officers.
The story adheres to the franchise's established horror-mystery format centered on traps, investigations, and twists. A subplot involving police corruption appears but functions as a secondary element rather than the core premise, with director Darren Lynn Bousman stating that the focus was not meant as commentary on contemporary social issues. The leads occupy original roles created for this film, supported entirely by the in-story precinct setting and family dynamics.
No established Saw characters undergo race, gender, or sexuality alterations, and identity politics do not drive the narrative. These choices keep ideological content minimal and incidental, preserving the series' primary emphasis on gore and puzzle-solving over messaging.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
Director statements emphasize focus on franchise horror elements over social messaging, with no evidence of DEI-driven mandates or inclusion-focused marketing shaping the production.
