Detailed Analysis

The film's core premise is a gender-swap of the established Conan the Barbarian character, centering an all-female lead cast that portrays Conann through six actresses across her life stages and replaces the traditional male archetype with fluid identities.

This casting decision drives the narrative, reframing barbarism explicitly as a female trait while incorporating scenes of Conann kissing her past selves before killing them, turning the story into a platform for identity experimentation rather than action or adventure. Prominent lesbian relationships function as primary narrative drivers, including the central Sapphic romance between Conann and Sanja, alongside gender-fluid elements such as the dog-headed demon narrator Rainer played by a woman with non-binary traits. Director Bertrand Mandico's stated intent to queer the source material, challenge heteronormativity, and disrupt traditional gender norms through iconoclastic gender-bending, combined with the film's Queer Palm premiere, demonstrates how these progressive elements are deliberately inserted as the foundation of the project, compromising entertainment value by subordinating the original character's essence to ideological messaging.

Key Factors

Gender-swap of established Conan character as core premise
Prominent lesbian relationships and self-intimacy as narrative drivers
Director's stated queer/gender-nonconforming intent and Queer Palm premiere
