The female lead's arc involves emotional support and agency in a cult setting, which some interpret as subverting toxic male behavior or patriarchy, but this stems from standard relationship drama and horror tropes rather than activist framing. Casting includes several actors of color among the American visitors in a story set in rural Sweden, presented as anthropology students without source-material changes or clashes.

Creator statements frame it as a breakup and grief story without emphasis on social justice. Progressive readings exist in criticism (e.g., matriarchy vs. patriarchy or critiques of entitlement), but these are overlays on a neutral horror narrative, not embedded messaging. No lectures, pronoun usage, or identity-focused subplots; audience reactions rarely label it 'woke' and often reject such framing outright.
