Mārama delivers a 9/10 woke lecture by framing colonization as the root of personal rape, murder, and cultural theft, then centering the heroine's supernatural revenge as righteous indigenous reclamation. Skip it if you want story over political score-settling.
The film's core premise centers on a young Māori woman, Mārama (played by Māori actress Ariāna Osborne), summoned to Victorian England where she discovers the English whaler Nathaniel Cole (Toby Stephens) raped and murdered her Māori grandmother Arorangi, mother Hinemoana, and twin sister Te Haeata, fathered her through incest, and fetishistically collects Māori artifacts including a stolen wharenui and preserved heads.
She embraces her Matakite powers, performs a defiant haka, kills Cole, and returns the victims' heads to Aotearoa for burial, explicitly framing colonization as the source of horrific personal and cultural violation. Director Taratoa Stappard, of Māori descent, has stated the story draws from real colonial atrocities and his own ancestry to highlight 'disturbing scenes of the violation and desecration of Māori culture' so audiences 'understand our past' to move forward, with the narrative structured around indigenous reclamation against white male possession and cultural theft.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
