Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum scores a clean 0/10 for woke content by sticking to classic found-footage horror, jump scares, and supernatural tension with zero identity politics or social messaging.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a straightforward 2018 South Korean found-footage horror film centered on a YouTube crew staging fake scares inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital for online views, only for genuine supernatural forces to emerge.
The plot, characters, and themes revolve entirely around classic horror tropes—greed-driven livestreaming, possession, jump scares, and a bleak downer ending—with no progressive ideological elements such as identity politics, critiques of traditional norms, DEI-driven casting, or social justice messaging. The cast consists of original Korean characters played by Korean actors with no established source-material changes or cross-sex casting.
Minor subtext around social media obsession and historical institutional rumors exists but functions as neutral storytelling context, not activist framing. Reception focused on its scares and commercial success as the third-highest-grossing Korean horror film, with zero documented backlash or discussion tied to progressive themes.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
