The Last of Us Part II earns an 8/10 woke score by forcing lesbian romance and trans identity into the core plot, turning revenge into identity politics that alienated fans. Skip it if you want gameplay over heavy-handed DEI messaging.
The Last of Us Part II centers progressive ideological elements through its core cast and narrative arcs.
Ellie’s lesbian romance with Dina drives significant emotional beats and gameplay sections in Seattle, while Lev—a trans man born Leah—serves as a major supporting character whose identity and backstory receive explicit focus, including scenes addressing family rejection tied to gender. Naughty Dog’s marketing and post-release statements from director Neil Druckmann highlighted intentional diversity in casting and character identities as a priority.
These elements extend beyond incidental representation into plot centrality, with identity exploration layered onto the revenge cycle. Reception shows a stark critic-audience divide, with Metacritic user scores plummeting amid widespread accusations of forced messaging and character alterations that clashed with expectations from the first game.
X discussions frequently label the title as heavy on DEI, citing the prominence of non-traditional relationships and identities as detracting from the story’s entertainment focus. The premise would shift substantially without these identity-driven subplots and character choices.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
Director Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog’s post-release statements and marketing explicitly highlighted diversity and inclusion as deliberate priorities, aligning with broader studio efforts to center progressive character identities.

Can't be more woke than this game.
One of the worst games I've ever played, story wise... Everything happens because f u, just to make the empowered women look awesome, narrative is very sloppy and characters development is just ridiculous
One of the worst games to ever exist
I really wanted to love this game. I always knew that Ellie was kinda gay, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but the excessive focus on the lesbian romance takes your attention away from the plot. Abby looks like a bodybuilder, and the game just doesn’t keep you engaged like the first one did. I kept playing because I was curious to see what would happen, but I was disappointed with what they did with the game. I think it could have been great if they had focused more on the story and left some of the woke stuff out of it.
