The game adds a new protagonist with a key companion bond and reimagines a mythological figure, drawing some criticism for modern updates, but these shifts support the story without centering identity themes. This balanced approach lands a moderate 5/10 score.
Sophia serves as the new protagonist, an original character portrayed as a rugged, tattooed, tanner-skinned smuggler and skilled melee fighter raised in a Venetian gang; her aggressive combat style and independence drive the action-adventure shift from prior stealth entries.
The narrative centers her backstory, visions linking her to the Prima Macula, and a close bond with companion Leni, explicitly described in reviews as her girlfriend with lines like “I would’ve done anything for her,” adding a prominent female relationship dynamic. Ancient timeline sequences reimagine Theseus as a female Knossian soldier, altering the established mythological figure. Developer statements emphasize creative reinvention and a new setting in Minoan Crete without activist framing or consultancy mentions, while audience reactions on X and forums highlight backlash over the “girlboss” lead, implied queer elements, and historical diversity as “woke.” These changes influence character arcs and subplots without making identity politics the premise or primary emotional driver.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
Developer statements focus on creative reinvention and the new setting without activist framing, ESG references, or marketing centered on progressive credentials, though audience reactions note perceived 'woke' elements in the changes.

The most obvious woke shit is the Ariadne/Theseus rewrite — in Greek mythology, Theseus is a male hero, but the game reveals that its “Theseus” is actually Ariadne, a woman taking over his identity and heroic role. Normally that kind of rewrite would annoy me, but the way it plays out here is actually handled pretty reasonably, so it never bothered me that much while playing. There’s definitely a slight DEI/LGBTQ vibe around the game, but it never gets obnoxious enough to ruin the experience. Ariadne isn’t ugly either — honestly, she’s at least better-looking than the actual protagonist. The main character isn’t hideous, just noticeably less attractive than she could have been, which gives off a bit of that modern “don’t make female characters too pretty” design philosophy. So yeah, there’s some woke shit in here,
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy shifts away from the established series identity by swapping out Amicia and Hugo for Sophia, a brown female smuggler set as the lead. Focusing the narrative on her backstory while depicting the religious order of nuns as primary villains pushes a forced ideological dynamic over organic storytelling. Instead of building naturally on the dark medieval atmospheric tension that made the originals standout, the campaign prioritizes modern representation and anti-religious tropes at the expense of a compelling narrative.
Race swapping, a lot of forced diversity, lesbian relationship, misandrist neo-feminist rhetoric, mythology rewritten with a woke twist, male mythological character rewritten to be a woman.
Despite the Main character Is a woman, the game doesnt twist lore and gameplay to give some sort of message.
wokeness pure - Theseus was a man and a famous hero of Greek mythology, as well as King of Athens. But in the game, he is simply a woman with a father complex.
