Mortal Kombat 1 scores a moderate 6/10 due to its prominent same-sex relationship between Mileena and Tanya that shapes key story scenes and dialogues, while the core experience stays a violent fighting tournament with no major character swaps or overt messaging.
Mortal Kombat 1's new timeline created by Fire God Liu Kang reimagines many characters' origins and roles for a 'utopian' vision, but the most prominent progressive element is the explicit canon romantic relationship between Mileena and Tanya.
Tanya, leader of the chastity-sworn Umgadi, and Mileena (Outworld's heir/empress) maintain a secret same-sex partnership, with story mode scenes, intros, and dialogues centering their bond as natural and supportive rather than stigmatized for its orientation—the secrecy stems from political and institutional rules, not societal homophobia. This elevates the representation beyond incidental background diversity.
No established characters receive race or gender swaps, no pronoun or body-type customization exists in this fighting game, and no overt lectures on systemic issues appear. Claims of Sweet Baby Inc. narrative consulting circulate in player discussions and credits references but lack definitive studio confirmation.
Reception shows a clear critic-audience gap (Metacritic 83 critics vs. 6.5 users), with some backlash targeting the Mileena-Tanya subplot alongside monetization and roster complaints. The core premise remains a brutal tournament fighter in a rebooted universe, keeping ideology influential on subplots but not foundational.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
Unconfirmed player discussions reference potential narrative consulting, but marketing and studio initiatives do not center progressive credentials or ESG-driven decisions.

Sektor and Cyrax swapping genders is unforgivable.
Mileena and Tanya being lesbians doesn't matter much. What really makes it woke is the gender swap of Cyrax and Sektor. Two male Cyborgs are Iron Women now, just to implement a boring love story to make Noob Saibot have feelings for someone. This was totally unnecessary, since there's Sareena, who has always been seen by fans as Noob's love interest.
Since *Mortal Kombat X*, the female characters have had their sexuality significantly toned down and have adopted much more feminist personalities—just compare their appearances to those in *Mortal Kombat 9*—plus Mileena was turned into a lesbian.
The swapped the gender of characters such as Cyrax and Sektor instead of adding new characters. Female character have been made "less sexy"
