Metaphor: ReFantazio explores themes of prejudice and social unity through its election storyline and diverse party bonds, yet keeps them secondary to the core quest and Archetype combat without heavy modern identity focus. This balanced approach earns it a moderate 5/10.
Metaphor: ReFantazio centers its original fantasy premise on a royal election tournament in the divided kingdom of Euchronia, where eight tribes with distinct physical traits (horns for Clemar, long ears for Roussainte, wings for Ishkia, etc.) face systemic discrimination and inequality.
The Elda protagonist, a shunned minority tribe member, rallies support by forging bonds across tribes to combat prejudice and anxiety-fueled monsters, with party members like Strohl (Clemar), Hulkenberg (Roussainte), Eupha (Mustari), and others explicitly drawn from different groups. This drives subplots around classism, religious bigotry, and unity, including debates on social safety nets and equal opportunity.
No established characters are altered, no pronoun/gender customization exists, romance is minimal and heterosexual (implied one-sided interest with Eupha via cultural handshake), and no queer or nonbinary focal elements appear. Developer statements frame tribes as personality-based constructs to explore real-world parallels without an explicit agenda, keeping the ideology prominent in themes but secondary to the election quest and Archetype combat. Reception shows critical acclaim for the narrative's nuance on systems of oppression alongside audience notes on bloat, with limited backlash labeling it overly PC.

While the game takes the topics of oppression and racism and diversity, the game does a fantastic job making them natural and not forced at all. You can enjoy this game and don't feel your being push an agenda, since its a fantastical world. Due to being a heavily story focus game you may feel "forced" to this agenda but trust me the game does a great job taking this topics and making them "digestible" and will not feel force at all.
