Hollow Knight: Silksong earns a low 3/10 woke score – masterful metroidvania with zero politics, just tight gameplay, exploration, and bug lore for pure entertainment.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is a masterful metroidvania sequel focused on tight gameplay, intricate exploration, challenging combat, and atmospheric world-building in a haunting bug kingdom, with virtually no progressive ideological intrusion.
Minor incidental elements include a side NPC, the Green Prince, confirmed gay via his relationship with a male lover in a dedicated quest area, and they/them pronouns for a few non-central characters like the Last Judge and Phantom. Fan interpretations stretch Hornet as 'trans-coded' due to her lore as the 'Gendered Child' among genderless siblings, but this is unsubstantiated headcanon with no narrative emphasis, and she affirms she/her in dialogue.
These are organic to the insect fantasy setting, appearing as background diversity without lectures, identity politics, or centrality to the premise, plot, or emotional drivers. No DEI consultancy, developer activism, forced changes, censorship, or social justice themes; Team Cherry's interviews emphasize design and difficulty.
Reception is overwhelmingly positive across critics (90+ Metacritic/OpenCritic) and audiences (Steam 90%+ positive, user scores 8.9/10), with the only review dip from Chinese translation issues swiftly addressed—no woke backlash, score gaps, or 'go woke go broke' narratives. Pure entertainment triumph.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.

It is not entirely woke because there are still a few normally gendered characters.

11/10 if I could. This game uses Unity, meaning every object has a TRANSform component. Transgender for everybody indeed. Additionally, the programmer, Jasmine Vine, came out as trans during the development of the Sea of Sorrow DLC, which includes lifeblood. This is evidence that lifeblood is estrogen, which the main character injects, further proof that she is in fact transgender. Finally, a line of code from the game reads "Transform heroTrans = hc.transform;", the variable name "heroTrans" here again makes it very clear that the player is transgender.
