Gorilla Tag keeps its core VR tag gameplay free of narrative or identity themes, with only optional Pride cosmetics and a conduct code adding moderate progressive elements that drew some parental pushback.
Gorilla Tag is a pure multiplayer VR tag game with no story, romance systems, characters, or narrative premise of any kind—players simply control customizable gorilla avatars in jungle maps for tag, infection, hunt, and paintbrawl modes.
The only progressive elements come from seasonal cosmetics and events, most notably the Pride Update that added rainbow flags, pride-themed items, and special perks/rewards exclusively for players wearing LGBT attire. This update drew parental complaints about it turning the game into a 'pride propaganda playground' with unavoidable 'inclusive' messaging aimed at children.
The developer's code of conduct explicitly bans homophobia and transphobia. No DEI consultancies, gender/pronoun customization, established character swaps, or identity-focused themes exist. The core gameplay and premise remain traditional entertainment focused on movement and social play.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
