Ghost of Yotei: 3/10 Woke Score. Classic revenge tale with zero politics, identity agendas, or lectures—just pure samurai action, family drama, and stellar reviews/sales.
Ghost of Yotei features a new original female protagonist, Atsu, in a traditional revenge tale set in 1603 Hokkaido, Japan, where she hunts down the Yōtei Six for slaughtering her family.
The story revolves around classic themes of vengeance, family reconciliation, and redemption, with no overt progressive messaging, identity politics, systemic critiques, or LGBTQ+ representation in the narrative—no queer relationships, pronoun usage, or social justice lectures. Gameplay and world-building expand organically on Ghost of Tsushima's formula, emphasizing samurai combat and exploration without modern activist framing.
Casting includes voice actor Erika Ishii, who identifies as non-binary and queer, for the lead role, sparking pre-release backlash labeling the game 'woke' due to her activism and perceived 'ugly' character design, but this is incidental to the content itself and does not alter the character's development or story. No involvement from DEI consultancies like Sweet Baby Inc., no developer statements pushing inclusion mandates, and cultural consultations focused on accurate Ainu and Japanese representation rather than ideology.
Reception is strongly positive (Metacritic 86 critic/8.1 user, OpenCritic 87/90 audience), with sales exceeding 3.3 million units shortly after launch, outperforming expectations despite polarized online sentiment from anti-woke voices fixating on the actress and female lead. The game prioritizes entertainment and lore-consistent storytelling, free from intrusive political elements.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
No developer statements or studio initiatives push inclusion mandates or progressive credentials, as consultations prioritized historical accuracy over ideology.

Ghost of Yotei gets called woke online because: – female protagonist replacing Jin – activist voice actor – representation‑focused marketing – identity‑driven story themes – modern‑sounding dialogue – empowerment‑style narrative – side characters with modern values – reviewers labeling it ‘progressive’ and ‘inclusive’.
I agree, the game isnt very woke.... BUT the way the studio operates and what they advocate for, it will be a matter of time till we lose another great studio. Avoid this game just like any first party SONY studio.
In the DLC "Echoes of Sekigahara" depicts Atsu in a romantic relationship with Nagato (a man). Having a heterosexual woman as a protagonist is definitely NOT woke.
Very woke since they gender swapped Jin Sakai from the first game with this bland non-binary actress which is an outspoken LGBTQ+ activist, and in the game the character is generic, poorly written and has an orientation toward females.
