Gears of War: E-Day earns a moderate 6/10 for its optional Pride emblems and heavier focus on new characters that dilute the Marcus-Dom origin story, even as the core Locust invasion gameplay remains unchanged. These additions sparked backlash without becoming the game's main driver.
Gears of War: E-Day centers its campaign on the Locust Emergence Day invasion through Bravo Squad—Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, new veteran Mags Carter (a former Pendulum Wars demolitions specialist discharged after a squad tragedy and working at a Kalona Imulsion refinery), and rookie communications cadet Lucas Reyes.
Player reviews repeatedly note Mags receiving outsized screen time and narrative weight that interrupts the advertised Marcus-Dom brotherly bond formation, with complaints that the story feels like it prioritizes developing the new characters over the core origin premise. The game also includes 20 optional Pride-themed multiplayer profile emblems (bisexual, demisexual, lesbian, and others) and credits consultancy firm Hit Detection for cultural/sensitivity evaluations, elements that directly fueled pre- and post-launch backlash labeling the title 'woke' or 'girlboss propaganda.' These additions represent noticeable progressive influence on character emphasis and multiplayer cosmetics without making identity politics the foundational premise or primary emotional driver—the core remains gritty third-person cover shooter action against the Locust Horde in a dark, grounded setting.
Critic scores remain high (Metacritic 87, OpenCritic 88) while Steam audience reviews show a wave of negatives tied to story focus and the emblems, confirming the elements' presence and divisive impact but not centrality. No established character race/gender swaps, pronoun systems, or explicit social justice lectures appear.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
Consultancy firm involvement in cultural evaluations and the addition of Pride emblems reflect studio-level progressive decisions that fueled pre- and post-launch criticism.

Very woke, estrogen maxxing game actually
The thing is woke in this game is the character Mags and thats it. She's a very forgettable character and other than that it's a great game. Alot of the haters are blowing it out of proportion
Complete and total Woke Trash that plays itself.
Unacceptable level of wokeness. I understand women want to be included in games, yare yare. But Gears Of War franchise should be exclusively man and man only. Game had a huge chance for a win, but the unthinkable happened, developers lied again, saying its a homecoming. Fake marketing once again. Think of TLOU2 marketing. Same category. If you have balls, never play such games.
Way more woke than a "6"
