Dragon Age: Origins scores a safe 2/10 on wokeness—pure epic fantasy RPG with gritty quests, moral choices, and zero politics or lectures, just stellar storytelling.
Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition is a classic dark fantasy RPG focused on traditional storytelling elements like epic quests against a demonic Blight, complex moral choices, and gritty combat, with virtually no overt progressive ideological intrusion.
While it includes optional same-sex romance options for two companions (bisexual elf assassin Zevran and bard Leliana), these are incidental player choices that do not drive the core narrative, character arcs, or emotional payoff—the premise revolves around becoming a Grey Warden, uniting factions, and making brutal decisions in a prejudice-filled world of elves, dwarves, mages, and humans. Fantasy-themed discrimination (e.g., elf oppression, mage persecution, dwarf castes) feels organic to the setting without modern social justice lectures, systemic oppression framing, or identity politics as central conflicts.
Character creation offers male/female genders, standard races/classes, and diverse origins (e.g., city elf, dwarf noble) without pronouns, non-binary options, or forced diversity. No involvement from DEI consultants like Sweet Baby Inc., no localization censorship, no race/gender-swaps, and no developer statements emphasizing activism or 'challenging norms' for this 2010 title.
Minor 2009 backlash to explicit same-sex scenes was limited and did not impact its stellar reception (Metacritic 91 critic/user alignment, no score gaps). Contemporary sentiment praises it as a pinnacle of BioWare storytelling, contrasting it favorably against later 'woke' entries like Veilguard, confirming its pure entertainment focus without compromising value through ideological embedding.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
As a pre-2010 BioWare release, there are no developer statements on inclusion mandates, studio DEI initiatives, or marketing centered on progressive credentials.

I think the issue is if you rate the wokeness based on 2026 woke standards you artificially skew the rating But you have to put yourself back to 2009 and then you realise that for its time Dragon Age Origins actually was extremely woke thus why I rated it 10 on the woke scale The entire elven race was symbolic for the racism against blacks in America Then you had Sten which was the embodiment of republican ideals and was basically meant to show the player how stupid these are. If you played as a female character Sten would be baffled by the fact that a woman could be a warrior. If you played as a male character you'd instead have this dialogue with Sten and either Leliana or Morrigan. Throughout the game heavily loaded political topics about racism, extremist politics and even early days of populism are all heavily discussed in the dialogue and quests throughout the game So in terms of what wokeness was in 2009 you couldn't get any more woke than Dragon Age Origins
