Citizen Sleeper 2 weaves moderate progressive themes of bodily autonomy and identity into character arcs and relationships, yet keeps them secondary to the core loop of contracts, crew-building, and escaping corporate control. This balanced approach earns it a 6/10.
Citizen Sleeper 2 centers on a Sleeper android protagonist escaping corporate control, building a crew including Serafin (initial companion and potential romantic partner) and recruits like Femi and Nia (protective brother-sister pair), while completing dice-driven contracts.
The narrative incorporates explicit progressive elements through returning character Bliss, who shifts from she/her in the first game to they/them pronouns as non-binary; developer Gareth Damian Martin (they/them) stated this creates "a fun discussion between a non-binary person and a Sleeper about their experiences" and ensures "there are trans and non-binary people in the Citizen Sleeper universe," moving identity themes from subtext to foregrounded text. Queer romantic dynamics with Serafin and broader motifs of bodily autonomy, marginalization, found family, and anti-corporate solidarity further embed these elements in character arcs and relationships.
No character creation pronoun or body-type systems appear, and diversity among new crew feels organic to the setting rather than forced swaps. These aspects influence subplots and intent without collapsing the core premise of survival and contracts into identity politics.

Clearly more ham-fisted with they politics. I felt like they woke friends got mad that the first game was not overt enough & so they had to be more overt and literally spell out they own modern political views with clunky regard for how it fits into the world. The gameplay changes felt like a bit of a misstep too. In the first game I felt alive on the eye, but in this one I feel like I'm on a railroad going to each stop to buy something or meet the next character actor in this pretend city. I enjoyed the parts that felt like 'citizen sleeper' like being on my ship with the crew & the struggle to survive in a generally uncaring culture.
