Citizen Sleeper pushes an 8/10 woke agenda by centering anti-capitalist rage, non-binary identity politics, and the developer's personal gender/mental health struggles as core narrative drivers. Skip it if you want sci-fi without the heavy progressive sermon.
Citizen Sleeper centers on escaping corporate ownership and surviving gig-economy exploitation in a ruined space station under interstellar capitalism, framing the player as literal corporate property in an abusive system of extraction and dehumanization.
This anti-capitalist premise drives the narrative, alliances, and world-building as a direct critique of systemic oppression and traditional economic norms. The developer, Gareth Damian Martin (they/them), explicitly channels their own non-binary identity, gender/sexuality struggles, mental health issues, and gig-work experiences into the story, using sci-fi to comment on real-world issues like who counts as a 'person' (linking to trans healthcare access and refugee status).
Prominent non-binary and queer characters appear, including Sabine (non-binary queer) and Bliss (non-binary with they/them pronouns), alongside same-sex relationships and a mushroom-growing commune presented positively. The Sleeper's identity is ambiguous/non-binary rather than player-customizable.
While no forced romance systems or pronoun selectors exist and reception remains largely positive with high critic scores, the ideology is central to themes, character arcs, and creator intent rather than incidental. Audience pushback is limited to niche 'woke detector' flags, but the embedding of identity politics and anti-capitalist messaging qualifies as heavy progressive influence.
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.

I think the 'woke'ness stems from a healthy place of rebellion. The message felt universal & not so othering. I thought the message conveyed was badass in every choice made. I proudly say it is my favorite game ever & I hate woke crap.
