Detailed Analysis

Cairn centers on fixed protagonist Aava, a professional female climber driven by obsession to summit Mount Kami, with story elements focused on personal sacrifice, resource management during the ascent, and strained relationships with her partner Naomi and others like Marco and agent Chris.

The narrative explores classic themes of dedication versus human connections through radio messages, journals, and encounters, without any framing around identity politics, systemic barriers, or critiques of traditional norms. Aava's same-sex relationship with Naomi appears only as background context for her emotional distance and the personal costs of her drive, never as a focal point, romance mechanic, or statement.

No character creation, pronoun options, gender-swapped established figures, or developer statements indicate activist intent; The Game Bakers emphasize environmental sustainability and the "search for freedom" in interviews, consistent with their prior non-ideological work. Reception shows strong critic and audience scores with complaints limited to mechanics and Aava's prickly personality, and dedicated DEI analyses label the title free of such elements.

Key Factors

  • Fixed female protagonist justified by story role as pro climber
  • Background same-sex relationship incidental to obsession/sacrifice themes
  • No character customization, DEI consultants, or activist developer statements
  • Traditional narrative of individual determination without political framing or lecture moments

Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.

Main character is a typical brown mix, as seen in google promo events. Barely qualifies as a woman. And has a same gender partner, and they have a cat. THO the rest 97% of the game is just so freaking good, the music, the mechanic, the exploration, the vibe. One of the best games I have ever played. Wished it wouldn't have these addons, but if a game is this good, I can accept the characters as they are. Similarly as in Life is Strange one, for example.
