Borderlands 3 includes deliberate non-binary characters, they/them pronouns, and multiple LGBTQ+ figures in prominent roles, yet these elements sit alongside an unchanged looter-shooter premise and cult-leader plot. The result is a moderate 6/10 for noticeable identity focus without a full narrative overhaul.
Borderlands 3 embeds noticeable progressive ideological elements through its character roster and explicit identity representation.
The playable Vault Hunter FL4K is a non-binary robot explicitly using they/them pronouns, with co-writer confirmation of intentional design as an identity discovery allegory, including visual nods to trans pride colors. Supporting NPC Lorelei (Lor) is portrayed as nonbinary and exploring transition, voiced by a trans actor. The game continues and expands the franchise's pattern of multiple LGBTQ+ characters, including pansexual Zane, the established gay couple Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs with a dedicated side quest, and others like Moxxi.
These elements receive prominent placement among the four new Vault Hunters and key NPCs rather than remaining incidental background. Developer statements emphasize deliberate inclusion of queer and nonbinary identities. Audience reception shows division, with user scores lagging critics and recurring complaints about forced representation, annoying dialogue, and 'everyone is gay' fatigue in community discussions.
The core looter-shooter premise and cult-leader plot remain intact, but the character focus and pronoun normalization go beyond organic genre conventions into modern activist framing of identity. No evidence of consultancy firms or full narrative overhaul, keeping it from higher centrality.

Painfully millennial and unfunny story/dialogue in the main game, but not much overt politicalness. Features multiple LGBT characters, but this is side content and mostly handled in somewhat decent faith. There is literally a DLC with the main plot revolving around 2 men getting married, but it's not bashing you over the head with woke themes, surprisingly. The only grievance is FL4K, a main character, technically uses non-binary pronouns, however most people don't notice or care and the community mostly refers to FL4K as he, and it's never brought up within the game. If you ignore much of the dialogue for the base game, which is just bad writing and cringe, not necessarily woke, then this is a good and fun game with great side content overall.
